Although my background is in primary care, I have used that foundation to build my expertise in headache medicine. One of the most rewarding aspects of being a health care provider is having close, therapeutic relationships with patients. This is pivotal in delivering high quality care in a population that is often dealing with chronic pain and a constellation of other neurological symptoms that are not outwardly visible and therefore recognized or appreciated by others. It's powerful to see how much the simple task of active listening and validation can improve a patient's overall well-being. I cherish a strong patient-provider relationship and collaboration to determine the best treatment plan, attacking the problem from a multitude of angles. Ultimately, through this process, I find that I learn just as much from my patients and their lived experiences as they may learn from me.
