My focus is on optimizing the health and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children and adolescents. I help patients acquire the skills and habits that promote self-management.My interest in neuro-rehabilitation began during my fellowship in neuromuscular diseases with a Pearson Award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where I saw the health impacts of restrictive lung disease in patients who were paralyzed. This interest continued in my research in behavioral neonatal neurology in Philadelphia and later in Vermont, where I developed techniques for the assessment and promotion of feeding skills in premature infants. My specialties include digital game-based pulmonary rehabilitation, quality improvement research (headache, stroke referral, neuroradiology referral), qualitative research on specialty referral, medical narrative and global neurology. My ongoing research in neuro-rehabilitation, work that has led to three patents in this field, has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. I co-edit "The Pediatric Five Minute Consult, " am on the editorial board of "Games for Health Journal, " and serve on the steering committee for the Vermont Oxford Network Neonatal Encephalopathy Registry.
